Navigating Menopause – Lifestyle Strategies & Support

What to expect from this session

Building on the first session, this hour will focus on practical lifestyle approaches to support well-being during menopause. Topics will include stress management, diet, supplements, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and exercise. We will also highlight the importance of social connections and open conversations in managing this transition. Participants will leave with actionable strategies to help their clients enhance their health and quality of life during menopause.

  • Equip clients with actionable strategies to improve health and quality of life
  • Basic understanding of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

 

About the presenter

Marja (pronounce Maya) is trained in the Netherlands as a nurse with a post grad in Obstetric and Gynaecology.
In 2012 she moved with her husband and 4 children to New Zealand and settled down in West Otago, where her husband works as a GP.
She has been retrained as a personal trainer/holistic movement coach and yoga teacher, combining her medicall background with exercise and movement. She was a finalist in the Exercise NZ industry awards in 2019 and 2022.
In 2023, menopause hit her hard, leaving her with anxiety and depression to the point where she was suicidal. After getting the help she needed, she decided to upskill herself around hormones and menopause, as neither she nor her husband had recognised the symptoms coming with this change in hormones.
Since 2024 she is working closely together with menopause specialists in Dunedin. Marja has upskilled osteopaths, chiropractors, physios, nurses and personal trainers.
She is currently working on a 400-hour nursing post-grad in menopause care. This post-grad covers womens health, but specific topics as well: gynaecology, oncology, sleep, nutrition, endocrinology, sexual health, MHT/HRT, pelvic floor dysfunction, PCOS, cardiology, endometriosis, psychiatry are a few of the subjects that have been covered
She educated women in her clinic around HRT, supplements, lifestyle changes, mental health coaching and still works as a personal trainer as well.

It covers the physical, physiological, and psychological changes associated with aging, providing insights into how these changes affect exercise participation and overall well-being. The session aims to equip exercise professionals with strategies to effectively support and motivate aging clients in their exercise journey.

  • Understand the major physical changes in aging adults and their impact on exercise.

  • Recognize physiological changes affecting cognitive function and falls risk in older adults.

  • Identify psychological challenges faced by aging participants, including confidence issues and risk of isolation.

  • Apply practical strategies to support and motivate aging clients in fitness settings.

  • Adapt exercise programs to accommodate the unique needs of older adults.

About the presenter

Carol & Trudi have a combined 60 years in the fitness industry, teaching older adults fitness classes. Both have Cert III/IV in Fitness, and in Training & Assessment. Have been designing and delivering older adults training to fitness professionals for five years. Courses accredited throughout Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
