ADVOCACY
We’re here to advocate on your behalf and the industry as a whole.
Advocacy includes engaging with key political and government stakeholders including with the responsible Ministers’ and government officials in the exercise and health portfolios.
Throughout the pandemic EXNZ has continued to highlight the importance of exercise in Aotearoa New Zealand through activity in the media and engagement with the government. We work to ensure that the value of exercise to our nation is understood at all levels of government.

Representing the Industry
We also advocate on behalf of the industry – examples include childcare regulations, and music licensing fees. We regularly engage with industry, listen to your feedback, and act as your advocate in discussions that will impact the industry as a whole.
Big Wins
Below are some examples of when we have advocated on behalf of the industry and worked with government bodies to achieve outcomes that benefit all.
Commerce Commission
We engaged with the Commission when they reviewed our industry, and clarified common industry practices. In addition we helped communicate the new laws around credit contracts, and develop best practice guides and sample membership agreements based on both their comments, and comprehensive best practice legal advice.
Music Licensing
We partnered with OneMusic to negotiate new music licensing fees for our industry. We worked with those in the sector to develop requirements that allowed exercise providers and gyms to use commercially released music in your gyms. We continue to work with OneMusic to act as your voice.
COVID-19
We worked with the government to implement covid rules that ensured public health was prioritised while also allowing people to continue to access gyms and exercise providers freely. We also developed a comprehensive framework for exercise providers that provided clarity on how to implement the covid-19 protection within the different areas of our industry.
